Review of Rock Band ION Drum Kit

As I noted in Are Rock Band Drums Like Real World Drums? the drums are the most realistic part of fake plastic rock. Or at least the most analogous to their real world musical counterparts. As more evidence supporting this fact, G4 just published an interesting review of the $299 ION Drum Rocker Premium Drum Set from the perspective of a real rock drummer.

Now that the ION drum kit has been available for a few weeks, you can hit up YouTube for a lot of real world play examples, too. For example, the utterly ridiculous “song” Visions from Rock Band 2, which I’m convinced was included as a sick joke for those people who felt Rock Band was too easy.

If you can play that.. thing.. then the ION drums have definitely earned their $299 in my opinion!

Wow, I haven’t unlocked Visions yet, and from the looks of it it barely qualifies as a song. Bleh.

I think they just used the chick drummer for the review so that we all could watch her big boobies bounce around while she drummed ;)

I played on an Ion kit, and I was surprised to find that I didn’t like it very much.

On my trusty unmodded EL set, I’ve FC’d 9 songs and gotten dozens of gold stars. But I can’t keep a streak going on the Ion to save my life. And I get serious blisters on my ring and pinky fingers.

My best guess as to what’s happening is, the sticks are bouncing back and hitting the pads a second time. So maybe with a little practice, the Ion kit would work out better. I’m not going to rush out and get one, though.

“from the perspective of a real rock drummer”, errr, really?

Maybe this is the first time she has ever played any music video games, but she couldn’t even hit the notes when they came down slowly…Show drummer…just likes to spin the sticks (embarrassing)
