I noticed that Mad Catz is selling some officially licensed custom kick drumheads for Rock Band. They’re not much more than fabric circles with two clips, but still, the effect is kinda neat, and they’re only 10 bucks. So far they come in three designs.

I bought one (the basic Tattoo design — I like the color in the Elephant, but it kinda freaks me out a little) and scanned in the instruction sheet so you can see how simple it really is:

The circle is tensioned thin fabric, sort of like those auto-pop up tents, so it is durable and easy to collapse for storage. The clips are of the spring expanding type and flexible, so I’m pretty sure this would also work for the Guitar Hero World Tour drumset.. though using a Rock Band drumhead for a Guitar Hero kit would be kind of .. gauche, I guess. :)

These things are so simple you could probably make one yourself with a neat custom design, if you’re crafty enough. Sure, it’s a cosmetic frill, and it’s only ten bucks. It’s neat to have a faux (but cool lookin) kick drum front and center to hide your hard working legs from the audience!
